Today, on World Water Day, WEB Aruba N.V. (Aruba’s Water and Power Plant) is pausing a moment recognize the importance of water for our environment and for the welfare of our people. Water is so natural and necessary for everyday life, but we really do not take the time to appreciate its importance in our lives. This is most probably because we never lack water here. WEB is very proud to be able to supply
Aruba with the very best quality water on a continuous basis despite all the challenges to accomplish this, according to Asja Dongen PR of our water company. This is the 19th time that World Water Day is being observed since 1993.
Every year a specific aspect of water gets special attention. The theme proclaimed by the United Nations for 2012 is “The Security of Water and Food.” The purpose for this year’s theme is to put the focus on the increased demand for water to process food. WEB congratulates the Aruban public, but especially those who labor in the production of water. When we consider that it takes 7000 liters of water to produce meat to eat, we can appreciate how globally we must become more conscientious about the use of water to prevent it becoming scarce. For this reason the United Nations is motivating countries to introduce water irrigation projects and to recycle water for agricultural use.
Green House for Aruba:
It has always been a challenge for agriculturists in Aruba to have enough water to cultivate produce. It is in this vein that WEB’s innovative vision is to look for new techniques to offer adequate water for agriculture.
WEB has high quality waste water which they return to the ocean every day; and in view of the fact that the technology of a Green House is to make it possible to produce fruit and vegetables in a dry and hot climate, WEB has set out to explore this option.
In March 2011 WEB approached Santa Rosa with the idea to work together on setting up a Green House in the vicinity of WEB. Keeping it in the vicinity of WEB they can supply the water at a considerably low price and so doing make such a project a very viable one. WEB is very pleased that the government approved the institution of a special commission to study and explore the idea of a Green House, and that they are lending their total support to this project.
