Just a day ahead of its official unveiling Her Royal Highness Princess Laurentien got a extensive preview of what now adorns the garden corridor of the Queen Beatrix International Airport. Princess Laurentien of the Netherlands is the wife of Prince Constantijn of the Netherlands, the third son of Queen Beatrix. She was in Aruba attending activities related to the International Childrens’ Rights Day. Due to her official duties back in the Netherlands, she had to return a day ahead of the official unveiling of the art and sculpture pieces, however Her Royal Highness was very interested in contemporary art being displayed in public places and therefore gladly accepted the invitation of the CEO of the Aruba Airport Authority Peter Steinmetz to have a private presentation of the Sculptural Garden. This coincided beautifully with the general rehearsal being performed. Princess Laurentien got the opportunity to see original dance performances. The dances were specially conceived for the unveiling of the sculptures by Club di Movimiento choreographer Samantha Westera and well known dance professionals and choreographers Alydia Wever and Wilma Kuiperi. The Aruba Airport Authority is patron to the Sculptural Garden and as such promotes and stimulates the context of artworks at the airport’s public areas and aims to incorporate arts and culture of an elevated quality at the airport. The seven sculptures where given royal appreciation by the Princess, she admired “Dessert Fruit” by Ciro Abath, “Dancing with the Wind” by Miriam de L’Isle, “Double Nothing” by Ryan Oduber, “Look an Iguana” by Omaira Silva, “A Tribute to the Aruban People” by Gilbert Senchi, “Love is in the Air” by Osaira Muyale and “Message from the Cave” by Stanley Kuiperi.
The art pieces form a permanent exhibition that is open to the general public free of cost. They can be seen daily at the airport’s sculpture garden, located just behind the 14-Bis Restaurant.
