Last weekend the Suriname Open in Taekwondo was held in the city of Paramaribo, Suriname organized by Arthy Lie. Seven countries and 270 participants were in attendance at the Open in Taekwondo.
The Golden team of Brazil Taekwondo Foundation participated with 9 athletes. Arubans, Aischal van der Linde and Jendrique Gumbs were the only two athletes to win medals for Aruba. The level of the Open organized by Master Arthy Lie revealed that the Taekwondo sport is quickly moving forward in the Caribbean. Curacao, our sister island, who at one time dominated the martial arts, has made a remarkable come back. This time Curacao participated with 6 athletes and took home 5 gold medals and 1 silver. Curacao’s Cedric Meulens is intent on putting Curacao back to where they once were with this particular sport.
Aruba’s top athlete, Aischal van der Linde won her first fight from Trinidad & Tobago with a score of 7-1. Then, she went on to win Sandra Chikhoer of Suriname 3-1 in the final.
Jendrique Gumbs had his hands full. In his first fight, Jendrique met his Suriname contestant who towered over him, but Jendrique didn’t allow that to hinder him. He was able to dominate his opponent.
Jendrique Gumbs met with a fighter from French Guyana in the final, a high caliber contender. Jendrique was delighted to have won a silver medal.
And, Aruba is extremely proud of both Aischal and Jendrique…great job guys…keep it up! Visit Aruba and The Morning News applauds both of our top athletes…congratulations!
