Aruba’s hottest sport is Beach Tennis. With more than 300 enthusiastic local players enjoying a weekly competition and monthly ranking tournaments, the sport is growing fast. Well, what’s not to like: fun in the sun, cool drinks and a great atmosphere.
This sport is perfect for the Caribbean, thought Aruba’s Beach Tennis promoters and organizers Sjoerd de Vries and Jochem Ros, and together with Margie Bon of Bon Marketing in Curacao they organized a free Beach Tennis clinic at Mambo Beach.
Well-promoted and sponsored, the weekend was a giant success. From 10:00am till 7pm Sjoerd, Jochem Bertrand Coulet (a world-ranked Beach Tennis Po) and Cado de Vreede (Aruba’s top player) taught 85 adults and 25 kids the tricks of Beach Tennis at Sea Aquarium Beach. The reactions were terrific and their introduction to ‘the most electrifying new sport on the beach’ went off like a hitch.
The clinic was the first in a monthly series before ‘the real thing’ comes to Curacao: the international top players from Italy, the UAS, Brazil, Holland, Bermuda and Aruba will showcase what Pro Beach Tennis looks like during an international tournament at Aruba’s sister island in the week following the Aruba International Championships in November.
Judging from Curacao’s reactions it won’t be long before its first pro players will be joining them.
