Carey’s fondness for the ocean was evident throughout his childhood. As a boy growing up in Jamaica, he frequently fished the shores and dived the reefs. After relocating to Miami during his high school years, Chen participated in several fishing tournaments. It was these tournaments where Chen began to establish himself as a competitive angler.
From exhausting battles with Marlin to the peaceful feeling of the sun setting beyond calm waters, these visual memories became etched in Chen’s mind. As his photographic archive expanded, Chen began to sketch his memories on paper. His first masterpieces were donated to fishing tournaments in an effort to gauge public acceptance. Blown away by support, Chen began to spend more time in front of a canvas recreating some of his most memorable experiences. The rest is history.
