Fort Zoutman is hosting "A look at yesterday in the light of tomorrow" exposition

September 7th was the first day of the opening of an impressive exposition, titled, “A look at yesterday in the light of tomorrow.”  The exposition is housed in the historic Fort Zoutman in Oranjestad. Rita Maasdamme is the designer and artist of the exposition and she is a talented Dutch-Aruban artist.

The exposition pictures historic and traditional scenes of Aruba and other countries in the Caribbean. Rita Maasdamme’s designs are historic scenes in the tradition of Surinam-Caribbean diorama. The designs are 3 dimensional presentations where figures and historical events are visualized through the use of handmade dolls, homes, vegetation, etc. Rita uses this method to illustrate the history of Aruba before the start of the petroleum industry.

Rita used themes such as folkloric music of Aruba, home life, aloe harvest and religious life around Alto Vista, which are all very nicely depicted. Popular Aruban personalities like the Shon (Master), and the farmer, Padu del Caribe and the Virginia slave and their stories all embody the essence of the exposition. She even included the story of Buchi Fil from Curacao in her presentation.

The exposition is open to the general public, for all ages, school children, families and visitors alike. Go to the Fort Zoutman to get your gaze of a piece of Aruba’s history in this impressive work of art on exposition.
