Celebrate Earth Day At Aruba's Greenest Getaway Bucuti Beach Resort

EAGLE BEACH, ARUBA – March 29, 2010 – Bucuti Beach Resort, one of the greenest resorts in the Caribbean, is inviting guests to join their cause this Earth Day by getting involved with a variety of activities and initiatives both on property and throughout the island to show their commitment to the environment.

Bucuti Beach Resort is a leader in sustainable tourism, setting a benchmark for hotels around the world looking to “go green.” To celebrate the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, guests staying at the adults-oriented resort can participate in any or all of the following scheduled activities:

Beach Clean-up: Earth Day at Bucuti kicks off with a morning beach clean-up where associates and guests will join hands to pick up litter along a one-mile stretch of public beach area.

Sea Turtle Lecture and Behind the Scenes Hotel Tour: Guests can learn about sea turtle protection in Aruba and even get a behind-the-scenes hotel tour by Bucuti's “Green Team.” Highlights include Bucuti's water recycling program, solar panels for water heating, use of organic, non-toxic cleaning products and other small ways to make a big impact by reducing, reusing and recycling.

Hike in Arikok National Park: Throughout the morning, park rangers from Arikok National Park will take guests on a guided hiking tour to identify the island’s endemic flora and fauna.

Recycled Crafts Contest: In the afternoon, guests are invited to judge the resort’s recycled crafts contests where associates compete to show off their best art pieces made from recycled materials. After the contest, guests can meet with Bucuti's owner, Ewald Biemans, who has been Aruba’s biggest environmental activist for the past three decades.

Dinner and a Movie: Earth Day ends with an authentic Aruban dinner at Bucuti's Pirates’ Nest restaurant and a beach viewing of Al Gore’s thought-provoking environmental film, “An Inconvenient Truth.”

"At Bucuti, environmental preservation is a top priority year-round, and Earth Day is the perfect opportunity to educate our guests on ways they can get involved," said Biemans. “Many of our guests return year after year and, as a result, have developed a strong connection to the island. We all know it is up to each of us to preserve Aruba’s beauty and culture so it remains here for all of us to enjoy for years to come.”

An award-winning, owner-managed property, Bucuti was the first resort in the Caribbean to be officially certified Green Globe 21 in 2000 and has been ISO 14001 certified since 2003. To reduce environmental impact, the resort has implemented many energy and water-saving practices including the use of solar panels, equipping guest rooms with automatic air conditioner sensors, flowing wastewater from the toilets to the government treatment plant for re-use, using biodegradable containers for beverages and food instead of plastic material, and collecting all water used in showers, sinks and baths in a grey water recycling system. The resort trains all associates on sustainable practices, and also sponsors several local environmental groups, including Turtugaruba Aruba’s Sea Turtle Foundation and the island’s Reef Care Foundation.
