Aruba will be holding a telethon in support of Haiti on January 25 2010, in the wake of the recent earthquake tragedy that afflicted the country.
January 25 is a significant day for Aruba, being a public holiday that commemorates the birthday of G.F. (Betico) Croes. The Prime Minister of Aruba, Mr. Mike Eman, made this announcement in a press conference held along with Aruba Red Cross spokesperson Greg Peterson. Several of Betico Croes' children were also present for the announcement, and expressed their full support and honor for the event to be held on the date that is of particular significance to them and to Aruba as a whole.
Mr. Greg Peterson made an appeal to the members of the press to support and promote the event as Red Cross volunteers for this Telethon initiative.
The event will take place at the Aruba Entertainment Center commencing at 6pm in the evening of January 25th and will continue up until midnight. It will be widely broadcast on radio and other media. Banks will be present with ATMs to facilitate the collection of funds, and cellular providers Setar and Digicel will also facilitate donations via SMS. The event will include well-known bands from Aruba such as Claudius Phillips’ OREO, Tsunami, Youth Extreme and others and the Telethon event will close with performances by various international musicians who are in Aruba for a musicians' convention being held on the Freewinds vessel that visits Aruba on a regular basis.
