Oranjestad -- Aruban orchids-lovers have been cultivating orchids on the island, for more than forty years. The in 1972 a group of orchid–fanatics came together and installed the organization known today as Sociedad di Orquidia Aruba.
Started as a small group of members today the Orchid Society consists of more than 200 active members, and still proudly counts some of the first pioneers among members.
Many islanders don’t realize that Aruba has its own native orchids; these are the Brassavola Nodosa and the Schomburgia Tibicinis.
Unfortunately only few of these plants can still be found in the wild. The Orchid Society Aruba features the Brassavola Nodosa on its logo and celebrates its importance that way.
Orchids grow and bloom all over the world, in every climate, and every region of the world has its specific plants. There are more than 30.000 orchid-species and when all hybrids are added that number tops 40.000 different orchid flowers which liven up the entire planet.
This year the Orchid Society Aruba is celebrating its 35th year anniversary and will be hosting a mega Orchid Show in conjunction with Flora Market on Saturday, April 28th and Sunday, April 29th 2007, from 10.00 am to 6.00 pm.
Flora Market is located in Avenida Milo Croes, Dakota, not far from the airport, just off the main highway.
The annual orchid show takes traditionally place in April since most orchid plants bloom in April and all members will be showing off their best, most prized specimens during the Orchid Show.
An invitation is hereby extended to all Aruba’s visitors to come and join and mostly enjoy the relaxing and beautiful presence of blooming orchids brought together under one roof, especially for Arubans and their visitors, with no entrance fee, the Orchid Show admittance is free.
